During the 81st UN General Assembly, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed critical global security and economic issues. He raised alarms regarding the increasing frequency of attacks on commercial vessels and seafarers in the Gulf, Red Sea, and Black Sea, noting that such incidents are “no longer exceptional.” To address these maritime threats, India and Liberia co-initiated the ‘Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers.’ Reaffirming India’s zero tolerance policy toward terrorism, Jaishankar stated that the nation would exercise its right to self-defense against terrorist activities. He emphasized that state-sponsored terrorism used for cross-border objectives poses a direct challenge to the global order, arguing that “friendship and goodwill cannot coexist with terrorism.” He further criticized an unnamed country, described as a “serial practitioner of terrorism,” for misrepresenting facts during the assembly. Jaishankar also highlighted the “four F” crisis facing the Global South—food, fuel, fertilizer, and finance—and warned against the “weaponization” of global supply chains, finance, and technology, stating the world is “living on the edge of an abyss.” He noted that this crisis is exacerbated by factors such as El Niño and impediments to grain movement. Regarding ongoing international conflicts, he expressed concern over the war in Ukraine, calling for an end to “endless wars,” and reaffirmed India's support for a two-state solution in the Middle East while noting that India continues to provide humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian people.
