Indictment in San Diego mosque shooting

Following a May 18, 2026, shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, a Forsyth County grand jury has indicted 17-year-old Sarah Lindsey Santiago. Although Santiago was not physically present during the attack, prosecutors allege she aided and abetted the gunmen, Cain Clark and Caleb Vazquez, by coordinating a livestream of the massacre and distributing their white-supremacist manifesto.

District Attorney Jim O’Neill stated that Santiago was aware of the attackers' plans to target the mosque, a synagogue, and a predominantly Black high school. Prosecutors also allege she purchased a white-supremacist symbol patch for one of the attackers to wear. The two gunmen killed three people before committing suicide.

Santiago is being tried as an adult and faces three counts of murder and one count of conspiracy. Legal proceedings are ongoing, with defense attorneys raising issues regarding mental health and social media, while researchers have noted potential links between violent extremism and adverse childhood experiences.
