Indigenous art installations in Canada

Overview

Indigenous art is being highlighted across Canada through new installations and upcoming exhibitions. At Okanagan College, located on the traditional unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan and Secwepemc Nations, Cree artist Stewart Steinhauer has installed two granite bear sculptures. The piece ‘Senklip and Ki Low Na’, depicting a mother bear and three cubs, was placed at the Kelowna campus, while ‘Spirit of the Mountain Grizzly’ was installed at the Penticton campus.

Additionally, the VISAC Gallery in Trail is scheduled to host an exhibition titled ‘A Gathering of Indigenous Voices’ from September 14 to October 8. The exhibition will feature works by four artists—Johnny Mukwa, Mark Anthony Jacobson, Kassondra Pelletier, and Laura Lee Graves—representing Métis, Anishinaabe, Cree, and Hesquiaht cultures. The show aims to explore connection to the land and the resilience of Indigenous voices in alignment with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
