Indigenous girl gang rape investigation in Amazonas
Overview
Authorities in Amazonas are investigating the gang rape of a 15-year-old Indigenous girl in the Catitu community, located in the rural municipality of Itamarati. The assault occurred in September, following reports that suspects offered the teenager alcoholic beverages before the attack.
The investigation was prompted by videos of the violence circulating on WhatsApp, reaching cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Brasília. In the recordings, perpetrators reportedly referred to the sexual violence as a form of “cobrança” (collection or retribution), though the specific motivation remains unclear.
As of the latest reports, five men aged between 22 and 50 have been identified as suspects. Two individuals have been arrested, while three others remain at large. The Amazonas State Court has classified the case under multiple statutes, including rape and the production and dissemination of explicit images involving minors. The National Foundation for Indigenous Peoples (Funai) is monitoring the situation.
