Since the July 2026 launch, Indonesia’s AI agenda has focused on sovereignty, domestic semiconductor capacity, and the joint use of AI and blockchain to protect trade. President Prabowo Subianto has recently pledged to accelerate digital education for schools and Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) under the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) organization. Addressing administrative delays between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the President announced the distribution of four interactive flat panels (IFP) to each NU school and pesantren to ensure they catch up with state schools. Recent developments have also expanded the focus to the judiciary and digital infrastructure. At the National Law Forum, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria noted that while AI can streamline judicial administration—citing the Supreme Court’s use of ‘smart panels’—it must not act as the final decision-maker. He also highlighted the legal challenge of authenticating synthetic evidence, such as AI-generated video and audio. This technological shift is placing unprecedented pressure on connectivity. connectivity, with Telkom Indonesia executives reported reporting that AI-driven bandwidth demand is growing 10 to 20 times faster than previous levels. Consequently, Telin, a subsidiary of Telkom, has seen its international submarine cable business grow by over 20% annually, with critical infrastructure like the Bifrost cable reaching full capacity in less than a year. This surge in connectivity demand is part of a broader regional trend, as Indonesia’s digital economy is projected to approach US$100 billion by 2025.
