Indonesia BPOM food safety initiatives

In early July 2026 the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) began approving health and food products developed by university researchers, marking the agency’s first step toward involving the academic sector in its oversight of new consumables.

By the end of the month BPOM announced a broader push to tighten food safety across the country. The agency introduced three new regulations, three decisions and 15 guidance manuals, and revised the governance of the Free Nutritious Meal program after a series of child food‑poisoning outbreaks. Simultaneously, BPOM’s Surabaya office launched a training course for 100 scout cadets to become food‑and‑drug safety educators, extending outreach to schools, universities and local communities. Together, these actions illustrate an escalating effort to strengthen food safety standards, expand regulatory coverage and build community awareness.
