Indonesia Danantara sovereign wealth fund strategic planning

Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, continues to implement a strategic roadmap focused on digital transformation, capital allocation, and the integration of artificial intelligence within state-owned enterprises. The agency is also progressing with its participation in the demutualization of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) via Danantara Investment Management, a process expected to conclude under the Financial Sector Development and Strengthening Law (P2SK).

Market volatility has intensified around these structural changes. The Indonesia Composite Index (IHSG) experienced significant fluctuations between August 10 and August 11, 2026. Despite an initial opening gain on August 11 at 6,383.81, the index faced heavy selling pressure, eventually closing down 1.53 percent at 6,267.88. This downturn was attributed to global market trends, geopolitical tensions between the US and Iran, and anticipation regarding the MSCI index rebalancing scheduled for August 12.

In response to the demutualization and market shifts, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) is reviewing ownership limits for the BEI. OJK Executive Head Hasan Fawzi noted that while maximum ownership limits are being considered, “exceptions may be made for strategic partners through an approval process.” To support the MSCI rebalancing, the regulator has emphasized increasing market transparency through more granular share ownership data, aiming to ensure global index providers can accurately evaluate Indonesian equities without requiring market freezes.
