The food safety crisis and corruption investigations surrounding Indonesia’s free nutritious-meal (MBG) program have intensified. Suspected poisoning cases have surged, with reports in early September 2026 indicating nearly 2,000 additional victims across Aceh, West Sumatra, South Sulawesi, and East Java. By mid-September, surveillance data indicated 50,059 people affected across 560 incidents in 36 provinces. In late September, new outbreaks emerged in Pati and Surabaya, where 172 medical students fell ill. In October, mass poisoning incidents were reported in Bogor, affecting 103 students, and Cirebon, where 395 victims—including students and teachers—required hospital treatment. Simultaneously, the Attorney General's Office has advanced major corruption probes. Six suspects, including former BGN Head Dadan Hindayana and two former Deputy Heads, have been handed over to prosecutors for alleged mismanagement causing estimated state losses of Rp10 trillion. A separate investigation into the procurement of electric motorcycles, involving a Rp1.2 trillion budget, has led to the naming of five suspects and the seizure of high-value assets, including aircraft and luxury vehicles. Additionally, BGN Head Sudaryono reported fraudulent schemes where foundations demanded illegal fees from kitchen partners. In response, the BGN is implementing reforms. To improve safety, the agency is piloting buffet-style service in several provinces and has activated 480 new nutrition service units (SPPG) in underdeveloped regions. The agency also adjusted the incentive model from a flat daily rate to a per-portion system to increase efficiency. Despite these efforts, the program faces scrutiny over data accuracy and distribution equity. By late October, the program reached 57 million beneficiaries, utilizing a budget of Rp149.79 trillion. In mid-October, the BGN faced further disciplinary and financial challenges. Following an audit by the Audit Board of Indonesia (BPK), 91 SPPG units were suspended for failing to return approximately Rp18 billion in state funds.
