Indonesia forest fire mitigation efforts

In late July 2026, authorities in Magetan, Central Java, built a 1.8‑km firebreak in the Cemorosewu forest to contain potential fires on Mount Lawu's slopes. The operation involved police, the state forestry agency, the army, disaster officials and local volunteers, reflecting an immediate response to severe drought conditions and a spike in fire incidents across the region.

A few days later, Barito Utara Regency in Central Kalimantan announced expanded fire‑mitigation and preparedness measures ahead of the predicted August‑September peak risk period. The regency pledged tighter coordination with the national disaster agency (BNPB) and the provincial administration, while the BNPB chief highlighted that over 1,300 disaster events nationwide were largely hydrometeorological. The province remained under an emergency status for forest and land fires, underscoring a shift from localized firebreak construction to broader regional coordination and planning.
