Indonesia national football team player updates

Overview

The Indonesia national football team is managing player availability and recruitment efforts involving overseas-based and naturalization candidates.

Defender Mees Hilgers, who has been recovering from a long-term injury, has returned to the SC Heerenveen match squad. Hilgers has expressed a desire to return to the national team for the November 2026 FIFA Match Day and has been in communication with head coach John Herdman. To maintain fitness, Hilgers has recently appeared for the SC Heerenveen U-21 side.

Regarding squad expansion, striker Dean Zandbergen is reportedly facing eligibility issues related to lineage verification. As an alternative, Taisei Marukawa has emerged as a potential candidate for naturalization to bolster the attack for the 2027 Asian Cup. Other overseas players continue to compete in European leagues, including Calvin Verdonk with LOSC Lille and Nathan Tjoe-A-On with Willem II.
