Indonesian environmental conservation initiatives

Overview

Indonesia has implemented various programs aimed at ecosystem protection and disaster mitigation. In North Sumatra, authorities are expanding mangrove rehabilitation efforts, building on a 2023 focus of approximately 8,800 hectares to enhance carbon sequestration and support local fisheries. Concurrently, the ‘Sungai Lestari’ (Sustainable River) program, a collaboration between the Ministry of Food Coordination and the UNDP, is expanding to Bali to prevent plastic waste from entering marine environments through river systems.

In addition to these ecological restoration efforts, Indonesian police departments have introduced ‘green policing’ programs. These initiatives include tree-planting activities in West Sumatra and North Sumatra designed to mitigate the risk of landslides and promote long-term environmental sustainability through community awareness.
