Indonesian police crackdown on illegal casinos

Overview

Indonesian law enforcement agencies, including Bareskrim Polri, have conducted significant raids against illegal gambling operations in different regions.

In Batam, police raided a suspected casino in a Nagoya shophouse on August 15, 2026, following a multi-month investigation. The operation resulted in the detention of 197 individuals, including the owner, staff, and players from Indonesia and several foreign nations. Authorities seized approximately Rp7.79 billion in cash.

Subsequently, Bareskrim Polri dismantled another illegal casino at ‘Gedung SB’ in Sukoharjo, Central Java. This operation, which involved cooperation between the Maluku Regional Police and the Central Java Regional Police, uncovered activities involving baccarat, niu-niu, and fish shooting machines.

During the Sukoharjo raid, 71 individuals were detained and 30 were named as suspects, holding roles such as cashiers, card dealers, chip exchangers, CCTV operators, and technicians. Police seized approximately Rp1.048 billion in cash along with mobile phones, computers, gambling tables, poker chips, and CCTV equipment. The investigation remains ongoing to identify those who supported or managed the gambling transactions.
