Indonesian tin mining and production developments

Overview

The Indonesian tin sector is seeing developments in both new mining projects and the formalization of existing production. PT Dairi Prima Mineral (DPM) announced plans to develop the Anjing Hitam underground tin and zinc mine in North Sumatra, with a projected processing capacity of one million tonnes of ore per year.

PT Timah Tbk (TINS) has experienced a massive financial surge following a government-led crackdown on illegal mining and smuggling in Bangka Belitung. President Prabowo Subianto has commended the company for improvements in mining governance, noting that the shadow sector historically accounted for approximately 80% of regional production. The government reported closing approximately 1,000 illegal mines through operations involving the military, police, and customs.

In the first half of 2026, TINS reported a net profit of Rp2.71 trillion, an 804.6% increase compared to the same period in 2025. This figure has already exceeded the company’s full-year 2026 profit target of Rp1.61 trillion. Revenue grew by 146.9% to Rp10.42 trillion, supported by a 75% increase in tin ore production and an 85% surge in tin metal sales volume.

Despite these gains, Coordinating Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra highlighted persistent challenges regarding tin smuggling to Malaysia and Singapore. To address production quota issues on Belitung Island, where PT Timah’s 3,600-ton budget was exhausted in June 2026, the House of Representatives (DPR RI) is urging the government to issue a Presidential Regulation. This regulation would provide legal discretion for PT Timah to continue purchasing approximately 3,000 tons of community-produced tin while the company updates its geological data and applies for an amended Work Plan and Budget (RKAB).
