Indonesian tin mining governance crackdown
Overview
President Prabowo Subianto ordered an investigation and the closure of approximately 1,000 illegal tin mining sites in the Bangka Belitung Islands. This enforcement action, involving the Indonesian National Police and the Indonesian National Armed Forces, aims to dismantle unauthorized operations and smuggling routes to improve governance and support the state-owned enterprise PT Timah Tbk.
Following these orders, the Indonesian government moved to formalize the management of the situation. Coordinating Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra met with various ministries, provincial officials, and PT Timah Tbk to address governance issues in East Belitung. As a result, a small task force led by Deputy Coordinating Minister Otto Hasibuan will be formed to manage the mining situation.
