Indonesian transport, economic, and MSME developments

Indonesia continues to see regulatory and developmental shifts across its transport, logistics, and MSME sectors. In the MSME space, the Ministry of SMEs is nearing the final stages of integrating a 50% e-commerce service fee discount for local micro and small enterprises (UMK). This complements existing initiatives like the ‘J&T Jawara Lokal’ program, which provides up to Rp15 million in assistance to selected businesses.

Regulatory efforts include the Ministry of Industry enforcing mandatory Indonesian National Standards (SNI) for the bottled water industry. In the labor sector, the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) is advocating for law revisions to balance worker protection with national competitiveness, while lawmakers emphasize that the Labor Protection Bill must prevent discrimination and protect vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities.

Logistics and infrastructure developments remain active. While J&T Express reported significant shipment growth through automation, concerns have emerged regarding rising shipping costs caused by a lack of standardized air cargo fees and inconsistent volumetric weight calculations. Additionally, ICTSI’s East Java Multipurpose Terminal is working to strengthen trade links between East Java and Eastern Indonesia through improved connectivity.

In the financial sector, the number of capital market investors reached 30.3 million by August 2026, prompting calls for increased financial literacy. Meanwhile, the government continues its recovery program for MSMEs in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, with a multi-year budget allocated to restore business activities following regional disasters.
