Indonesian university stunting prevention programs
Overview
University-led community initiatives in Indonesia are targeting stunting through the training of local health volunteers.
In Tangerang, a team from the University of Indonesia launched an intervention in Sitanala to address stunting rates, which a 2024 screening indicated were at 25 percent among local toddlers. This program focuses on strengthening Posyandu health cadres and providing multidisciplinary health examinations in collaboration with local government and health centers.
Similarly, in Southwest Papua, Universitas Nani Bili Nusantara Sorong implemented a program in Warmon Kokoda Village to reduce stunting. This initiative, funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, utilizes a ‘5-Step Counseling Card’ to improve the capacity of Posyandu volunteers in monitoring child growth and nutrition education.
