Industrial and waste management expansions in Terni
Overview
The Umbria Region has issued approvals for industrial and waste management expansions in Terni.
Initially, the region approved an urban planning variant for the Santangelo Group in Cospea. This project involves expanding productive activities along via Natta and includes infrastructure improvements such as a new roundabout and public parking. Regional officials noted that a strategic environmental assessment was not required, though they recommended further studies on landscape integration, dust, odors, and tree preservation.
Subsequently, the region authorized a vertical expansion of the Ast hazardous waste landfill. This project aims to maintain the operational continuity of the local steel plant through landfill mining, which involves removing 1,100,000 cubic meters of old municipal waste to address groundwater leachate issues. The remediation plan includes installing a geological barrier of clay and bentonite, constructing a 20-meter high forested dune to mitigate noise and visual impacts, and planting 6 hectares of urban forest to compensate for CO2 emissions.
