Industrial explosions in Indian chemical plants

Overview

In late September 2026, an explosion occurred at Synergia Chem Industries in the Mahad MIDC area of Raigad, Maharashtra. The blast, suspected to have originated from a reactor or boiler during the production of para-nitro toluene ortho sulfonic acid, injured at least four people. Emergency responders contained the resulting fire after approximately two hours.

On October 17, 2026, another major incident took place at the SynZeal Pharmachem unit in the Saykha GIDC estate of Bharuch, Gujarat. An explosion in a 15-kilolitre reactor during a hydrogenation process killed five workers and injured at least six others. The blast caused a leak of methylene dichloride (MDC) gas, resulting in a chemical haze and eye irritation for nearby residents. Authorities have launched investigations into the cause and safety compliance of the Gujarat facility.
