Infant injury and death investigations in South America

Overview

Legal investigations have been launched in Argentina and Ecuador following several incidents involving infants and children.

In Argentina, authorities are investigating multiple cases of alleged medical negligence. In Río Grande, an exhumation was ordered for a three-year-old to determine the cause of death following claims of inadequate hospital care. In another instance, an autopsy confirmed that a child suffered oxygen deprivation due to placental detachment, leading to a probe into delays at the Materno Infantil Hospital.

Other reported incidents in Argentina include the death of a five-month-old baby following a pitbull attack in Malvinas Argentinas, and a fatal domestic shooting in Lanús that resulted in the arrest of a child’s uncle.

In Ecuador, prosecutors in Riobamba are investigating a newborn who sustained injuries, including blisters, while receiving hospital care. Medical-legal reports indicated the infant required 35 days of incapacity.
