Infrastructure and political accountability protests in Naga

Overview

In Nagaland, various civil society organizations have issued ultimatums regarding infrastructure projects and government accountability.

The Chakhesang Students Union (CSU) issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) over delays in the NH-29 Kohima-Jessami road project. The CSU sealed the contractor’s base camp in the Phek district, alleging that the current contractor, M/S Ratna Infrastructure Projects Pvt Ltd, has completed only 44.30% of the work despite an extension. The union demanded the termination of the contractor and fresh tendering, threatening a total highway blockade if demands are not met.

Separately, the Japukong Senso Senden (JSS) and Tzurangkong Senso Senden voiced opposition to a demand for the resignation of Minister Temjen Imna Along. That demand, issued by a Mangkolemba civil society organization, concerned the construction of a Multipurpose Hall in Mokokchung. The JSS and Tzurangkong Senso Senden characterized the resignation ultimatum as “inappropriate and ineffective,” advocating instead for constructive dialogue and expressing confidence in the minister’s leadership.
