Insecurity in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo

Overview

Insecurity in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has led to both direct violence and economic instability. In South Kivu, a surge in fatal armed attacks was reported in Bukavu and Uvira, involving shootings and killings in various neighborhoods. Local civil society members have called for investigations and security reinforcements.

In North Kivu, insecurity and rebel activity have caused significant food price inflation and supply chain disruptions. The Front pour la Refondation de la Nation (FRN) rebels closed the Goma-Walikale road, forcing traders onto more expensive detour routes. This, combined with excessive road taxes and the influx of displaced persons, has sharply increased the cost of staples like beans, rice, and cassava flour, as well as essential goods like soap and salt.
