Institutional and security challenges in Chile

Chile is experiencing growing concerns regarding organized crime, institutional integrity, and social stability. In late August 2026, Senator Carlos Kuschel warned that criminal mafias have penetrated public sector institutions and exploited vulnerabilities in land and port border controls, describing the country as “totally open to the world.”

By mid-September 2026, the situation evolved into a broader discussion of institutional crisis. During the Te Deum Evangélico, Bishop Héctor Cancino del Valle addressed the nation, citing economic hardship, rising crime, and political polarization as factors fragmenting the community. He urged leaders to focus on rebuilding rather than merely administering crises, stating that “Chile does not need more prophets of disaster.”

This social unrest is compounded by reports of municipal corruption. Data from the Third Observatory of Press indicated that between August 2025 and July 2026, approximately 73,711 million pesos were involved in reported corruption cases across 35 municipalities. The reports noted that one in ten municipalities had an official investigated, formalized, or convicted, presenting a persistent threat to the rule of law.
