Institutional integration of blockchain and asset tokenized
Overview
Financial institutions are increasingly integrating blockchain technology and digital assets into core operations through the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs). This structural shift aims to modernize markets by converting traditional assets—including real estate, bonds, commodities, and private credit—into digital representations on blockchain ecosystems to improve settlement speeds, enhance liquidity, and reduce intermediary costs.
In the United States, major exchanges are advancing these efforts, with the SEC approving a Nasdaq proposal to trade and settle tokenized securities directly on the blockchain, while the New York Stock Exchange pursues similar on-chain settlement initiatives. In South Korea, legacy firms are making significant capital investments in crypto-related infrastructure. Hanwha Investment & Securities recently approved a 597.8 billion won deal to increase its stake in Dunamu, while Hana Bank acquired a 6.55% stake in the operator through a 1 trillion won investment. Other firms, such as Mirae Asset Consulting and Korea Investment & Securities, are also pursuing partnerships or controlling stakes to prepare for the rise of central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
In Brazil, industry leaders are discussing the transition toward on-chain operations. Parfin is launching Rayls Sovereign, a platform allowing institutions to operate tokenized products on private networks that maintain connectivity to public blockchains to preserve privacy. Itaú has identified the transfer of collateral as a primary use case for expansion, while executives from Banco do Brasil emphasized that regulation and standardization are essential to assign responsibility for transactions. Technological implementations continue to utilize smart contracts and white-label infrastructure, though investors are cautioned to distinguish between tokens representing direct physical allocation and those representing mere contractual claims.
