Institutional investment in asset management firms

Recent SEC filings indicate significant institutional investment activity involving major asset management and real estate finance firms.

In the real estate sector, Blackstone Mortgage Trust director Henry N. Nassau increased his direct ownership to 218,523 shares through open-market transactions. Blackstone Inc. has also seen notable interest. While SFE Investment Counsel and Alberta Investment Management Corp previously acquired positions valued at approximately $8.89 million and $6.37 million respectively, further filings show broader institutional engagement. Norges Bank acquired a stake worth roughly $1.28 billion, and Bank of New York Mellon Corp acquired a position valued at approximately $514.7 million. Additionally, Renaissance Technologies LLC entered a new position worth about $164.6 million, while Focused Wealth Management Inc also reported new holdings. Institutional investors currently own approximately 70% of Blackstone’s stock.

BlackRock Inc. has demonstrated substantial expansion in the energy and utility sectors. During the second quarter, the firm increased its holdings in ONEOK, Inc. by 8.7% and established a new position in EOG Resources, Inc., acquiring an 8.68% stake valued at roughly $5.9 billion. Furthermore, BlackRock acquired a 9.37% ownership stake in American Electric Power Company, Inc., through a purchase of over 51 million shares valued at approximately $6.98 billion.
