Overview
In the Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria, suspected militants launched an attack on villagers gathering firewood. Initial reports on October 2 indicated that at least 15 people, including young and elderly men, were killed after being bound and executed at close range. At that time, three individuals were reported missing.
By October 4, the death toll rose to at least 28 villagers. This increase followed the discovery of 13 additional bodies with gunshot wounds in nearby bushes. The attackers are identified as suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants. In response to the assault, military officials stated that troops have initiated clearance operations to pursue the attackers.
