Internal tensions within Italy's Movimento 5 Stelle

Conte expressed commitment to the progressive project and pledged M5S support for the winner, while criticizing the inclusion of Matteo Renzi in the coalition.

Internal tensions have escalated as founder Beppe Grillo prepares a significant political return. While Grillo is engaged in a legal battle to reclaim the M5S name and symbol—with a court hearing scheduled in Rome for January—new details have emerged regarding his potential political moves. Beyond the possibility of launching an independent list to the left of the current coalition, Grillo is reportedly considering the creation of a new political party that could utilize the M5S branding.

This proposed party is envisioned as a technology-driven organization centered on younger activists, utilizing a web platform built on artificial intelligence and digital avatars. Reports indicate that Andrea Stroppa, a representative for Elon Musk in Italy, has expressed interest in the project, with discussions regarding potential economic contributions having taken place. While a legal victory for Grillo could impact the use of M5S branding, experts note it is unlikely to invalidate the 2022 electoral results that established Conte’s parliamentary group. Former M5S deputy Marco Bella has neither confirmed nor denied involvement in such a project, noting it might not align with traditional left or right-wing ideologies.

These developments are further complicated by new Italian electoral laws, which increase the signature requirements for non-parliamentary groups from 1,500 to 6,000 per constituency.
