International Coastal Cleanup efforts
Overview
The 2026 International Coastal Cleanup involved global volunteer efforts to remove marine debris and document waste types for environmental policy research.
In the Philippines, cleanup activities were widespread across multiple regions. In Central Luzon, volunteers collected over 75,000 kilograms of waste, while the Davao Region saw approximately 19,000 kilograms removed. Other local efforts occurred in Bacolod and Marawi City. Following these actions, the group Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability (IDIS) advocated for stronger policies to address plastic waste at its source.
Private sector participation in the Philippines included Phoenix Petroleum, which mobilized volunteers across 10 coastal sites, and 2GO Group, Inc., which partnered with SM Cares to deploy employees to sites in Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga, Davao, Cebu, and Manila. 2GO also provided logistical support, such as protective gloves and weighing scales, to assist in documentation.
International participation included The Bahamas, where volunteers removed debris at Yamacraw Beach to support Ocean Conservancy research, and Argentina, where the European Union Delegation and the Municipality of Vicente López organized a cleanup along the Río de la Plata to remove plastics and microplastics.
