International Coffee Day observance and evolution
Overview
International Coffee Day is observed to honor coffee-growing communities and support poverty reduction efforts. While the International Coffee Organization established the observance, a March 2026 United Nations resolution designated October 1 as the official date for the first UN-designated observance.
As the first UN-designated observance arrives on October 1, global celebrations continue to highlight the beverage’s economic footprint and its connection to health. Research cited by the Mayo Clinic suggests potential health benefits, including a reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, chronic kidney disease, and certain liver conditions, as well as possible links to improved mood.
In Japan, businesses are launching promotions to mark the occasion. Ezaki Glico Co., Ltd. is hosting an ‘Almond Milk Fair’ from October 1 to October 15 across 114 restaurants and cafes to highlight the compatibility of coffee and almond milk. Glico also plans to exhibit at the SCAJ2026 specialty coffee festival at Tokyo Big Sight, featuring barista sessions on plant-based milk trends. Additionally, local shops in Higashiosaka, including Kamikochi Azusa Coffee and Tully’s Coffee Kintetsu Fuse Station, are offering seasonal and Halloween-themed specialty brews.
Following the October 1 observance, the event continues to highlight coffee as both a social ritual and a professional craft. In Bangladesh, professional chef Ali Azom has trained nearly 3,000 individuals through Barista Training Bangladesh, emphasizing that coffee preparation is a combination of science—involving variables like temperature, grind size, and extraction—and art.
Historically, coffee culture is linked to ancient Ethiopia and its evolution into a brewed beverage in Yemen. Modern consumption continues to evolve through sophisticated home brewing technology, specialty beans from regions like Panama and Honduras, and diverse preparation styles such as Vietnamese coffee or cold brew.
