International Justice Summit in Istanbul

Overview

The International Justice Summit was held in Istanbul on October 8-9, 2026, at the Çırağan Palace. Hosted by the Ministry of Justice, the event convened approximately 600 participants, including justice ministers and legal professionals from over 70 countries. The summit, themed ‘The Future of Justice: A Common Responsibility for Humanity’, focused on global legal challenges such as accountability in Gaza, human rights, artificial intelligence, cybercrime, migration, and digital justice.

During the event, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan addressed the assembly, stating that justice is the ‘fundamental basis of the state’ and is vital for international peace. He criticized the existing global system, arguing it is facing an ‘erosion of trust’ and is no longer equitable or sustainable due to the failure to implement international agreements and court decisions. Erdoğan specifically targeted the United Nations, arguing that the decision-making mechanism is unfair because it relies on the veto power of just five members, which fails to reflect the will of over 190 nations.

Erdoğan highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing it as being turned into ‘the world’s largest concentration camp’ by forces that view themselves as being above international law. He also noted regional instabilities, such as the ongoing blockage in the Strait of Hormuz, and the misuse of technology by criminal networks regarding social media and crypto assets. Regarding domestic security, Erdoğan warned that criminals would not find safety abroad, noting that in the first nine months of 2026, Turkey secured 294 extraditions and brought 736 individuals to the country through various warrants. In conjunction with the summit, Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek participated in the 3rd Meeting of Justice Ministers of the Organization of Turkic States, advocating for enhanced cooperation through a shared e-Justice system.
