International public opinion on Gaza conflict

Overview

Public sentiment and diplomatic perceptions regarding the conflict in Gaza have shown signs of shifting internationally. An international survey conducted by the DAAD Center for German Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem found that in Germany, France, Great Britain, and Poland, respondents reported becoming more pro-Palestinian and less pro-Israel compared to two years prior. In Poland, pro-Palestinian sentiment reportedly grew from 14% to 30%, while in Germany, support for the principle of Israel’s security as a ‘Staatsräson’ dropped from 45% to 37%.

Further reports indicate a decline in global support for Israel as military actions continue. While Western governments have maintained military and logistical support, widespread public protests have emerged in the UK, France, and Germany condemning the scale of destruction in Gaza. Analysts suggest that Israeli public diplomacy efforts, or ‘hasbara’, are struggling to counter international perceptions, with critics arguing that certain rhetorical terms are used to deflect scrutiny of Israeli policies.
