The International Race of Champions (IROC) series was revived in June 2026 following its acquisition by Ray Evernham and Rob Kauffman. Two exhibition events were scheduled for August 2026: a Laguna Seca weekend and the Freedom 250 Grand Prix on August 22–23. The Freedom 250, a 250-mile street race through Washington, D.C., served as a centerpiece for the United States’ 250th-anniversary celebrations. The 1.7-mile, seven-turn circuit navigated the National Mall, Pennsylvania Avenue, and Constitution Avenue, passing landmarks such as the U.S. Capitol, the Washington Monument, and the National Archives. To manage safety at speeds reaching 185–200 mph, organizers welded shut more than 200 manhole covers to prevent them from being dislodged by aerodynamic suction. Vibration studies were also conducted to protect artworks at the National Gallery of Art. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump attended the festivities. The President performed a ceremonial lap in the presidential limousine, ‘The Beast’, and waved the green flag to start the 147-lap race. While White House spokesman Davis Ingle described the event as a way to ensure America receives a ‘spectacular birthday celebration’, the President’s ceremonial start drew significant social media criticism. Observers mocked his handling of the green flag, with some users criticizing his physical performance and questioning his cognitive fitness. Additionally, Fox Sports faced backlash for a social media post describing the President as ‘the Sports President’, which critics argued abandoned the network’s traditional separation from political discourse. The event drew an estimated 300,000 to 350,000 attendees and averaged 3.28 million viewers on Fox Sports. Sports, marking the highest viewership for a non-Indy 500 race since 1995. Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global won the inaugural race, leading 128 of the 147 laps and finishing 3.09 seconds ahead of Christian Lundgaard. Andretti Global teammates Will Power and Marcus Ericsson finished third and fourth, respectively.
