Law enforcement actions have resulted in the capture and extradition of several Turkish nationals wanted internationally via Interpol red notices. Previous operations included the arrest of H. B. in Amasya and a homicide suspect in Rome, alongside diplomatic efforts by Justice Minister Akın Gürlek to secure the extradition of organized crime leader Ramazan Bayğara. In the first eight months of 2026, Turkey extradited 657 individuals from 44 countries, a 207 percent increase from the same period in 2025. Of these, 162 were identified as leaders or members of organized crime groups. Additionally, Turkish authorities apprehended 409 individuals within the country who were wanted by 53 nations. Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi noted that 3,852 individuals remain wanted under Interpol red notices or similar international warrants, covering offenses such as narcotics, terrorism, and smuggling. Recent coordinated efforts have seen significant returns of fugitives. In late September, the Ministry of Interior announced the extradition of 76 fugitives from eight countries, including 29 wanted via Interpol red notices. ~~This operation involved 61 individuals from Georgia, 4 each from Greece and Germany, 2 from France, 2 from the United States, and one each from the United Kingdom, Serbia, and Azerbaijan.~~ By the end of the third quarter of 2026, Justice Minister Akın Gürlek reported that 89 individuals were extradited from 16 countries between July and September. During this quarter, Georgia provided 48 people, followed by Germany (12), Greece (10), and the United Kingdom (3). For the first nine months of 2026, the total number of extradited individuals reached 294, with Georgia leading the count at 137. In October 2026, Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi met with Greek Minister for Citizen Protection Michalis Chrisochoidis to address terrorism and organized crime. Çiftçi announced a ‘security diplomacy’ strategy to ensure criminals cannot find refuge abroad. During the first nine months of 2026, Turkey conducted 1,741 operations against 625 organized crime groups, resulting in 8,170 arrests. Çiftçi reported that 714 individuals have been extradited to Turkey so far this year and 969 red notices have been issued. In Athens, Çiftçi requested the expedited extradition of 60 individuals held by Greek authorities, warning that ‘Greece should not be a haven for criminals’ and emphasizing the need for rapid information sharing through Interpol.
