Interpol red notice arrests and extradition efforts

Overview

Law enforcement actions have resulted in the capture and extradition of several Turkish nationals wanted internationally via Interpol red notices. In Amasya, Turkish gendarmerie teams apprehended H. B., a German citizen of Turkish origin, in the Merzifon district. The individual was wanted by German judicial authorities for attempted murder and was transferred to the Ankara Removal Center for extradition. In Rome, Italian police arrested a 30-year-old Turkish man at Ciampino Airport arriving from England. The individual was wanted under a 2022 Interpol Red Notice for a 2020 homicide in Diyarbakir province. Having been sentenced to ten years in prison, he was transferred to Regina Coeli prison to await extradition. The Turkish Ministry of Interior announced the extradition of 60 fugitives to Turkey following coordinated operations involving the General Directorate of Security, the Ministry of Justice, and Interpol and Europol. Of these, 16 were wanted via Interpol red notices and 44 were wanted nationally for crimes including homicide, drug trafficking, and fraud. The largest number of captures occurred in Georgia (43), followed by Greece (5), Germany (2), and the United Kingdom (2). Expanding judicial efforts, Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek met with Greek Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis via video conference to discuss combating cross-border organized crime. Gürlek specifically requested the extradition of Ramazan Bayğara, leader of the ‘Bayğaralar’ criminal organization, along with Nedim Sorguç and Ali Yeşildağ. Bayğara is wanted under a Red Notice for forming a criminal organization and intentional murder. His extradition has faced delays due to a fire at his detention facility and a pending application with the European Court of Human Rights. In the first eight months of 2026, Turkey extradited 657 individuals from 44 countries, marking a 207 percent increase from the same period in 2025.
