Introduction of robotic surgery in Nigeria
Overview
Nigeria is expanding its medical capabilities through the introduction of robotic-assisted surgery services in different regions.
In Imo State, the Imo Specialist Hospital’s newly established Imo Robotics and Oncology Centre successfully performed its first robotic-assisted surgery. Led by a consultant from the United Kingdom, this public-private partnership aims to treat oncology and urological conditions while reducing the need for citizens to seek specialized treatment abroad. The state has also introduced a health insurance programme to improve accessibility to these services.
In Lagos, Redeemer’s Health Village launched a similar robotic surgery service in partnership with the U.S.-based firm ROBOMED Global. The Nigerian Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziaq Salako, noted that the initiative is part of a broader health transformation agenda, which includes plans for nationwide training and certification for surgeons to ensure safe clinical practice.
