Invasive mosquito species in the United States

Overview

Invasive mosquito species have caused increased pest challenges in California and Texas. In Southern California, ecologists have noted that some new species are diurnal, being active during the day at dawn and dusk, which differs from the nocturnal mosquitoes typically associated with West Nile virus. This has led to increased consumer use of chemical repellents and automated pest control systems.

In California, public health officials are managing extended mosquito seasons. In Santa Barbara County, officials identified the Yellow fever mosquito and the Australian backyard mosquito, the latter of which is known to transmit heartworm in dogs. In the Coachella Valley, the Mosquito and Vector Control District reported a 56% reduction in the invasive Aedes aegypti population in North Shore through the release of nearly 960,000 male mosquitoes carrying a naturally occurring bacterium. This species is a known vector for dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses.
