Arrests made in Malaysian non-Islamic ritual investigation
Overview
Authorities in Selangor, Malaysia, have launched an investigation into a viral video allegedly depicting a Muslim individual performing non-Islamic religious rituals. The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) is examining the footage under the Syariah Criminal Enactment (Selangor) 1995, specifically regarding acts that may show worship in a manner contrary to Islamic law or cause the religion to be viewed with contempt.
JAIS Director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad noted that officials are investigating whether the footage was manipulated using artificial intelligence or image superimposition. Parallel social media allegations identify a 21-year-old Malay man, Aliff Daniel, as the individual involved, claiming he engaged in spiritual practices associated with the New Age Movement and participated in rituals at a temple in Batu Caves.
Following these developments, the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) arrested the 21-year-old man and his 51-year-old mother in Kuala Lumpur. The arrests were executed under a warrant issued by the Shah Alam Syariah Lower Court. JAIS continues to investigate the suspects under Sections 4 and 10 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995, which cover acts of reverence contrary to Islamic law and the insulting of Islam. Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad stated that at least 14 other individuals are expected to be summoned to assist with the investigation. Additionally, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) has forwarded reports to state religious departments for further review.
