Investigation into fatal shooting of Alex Pretti
Overview
In January, 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti was shot and killed by federal immigration agents during migration operations in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Nine months after the incident, the family of Pretti has accused the Department of Justice and the Trump administration of shielding the involved officers and obstructing investigations. The family alleges that federal officials, including former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, attempted to defame Pretti by characterizing him as a person intending to cause mass harm to law enforcement. However, the family points to bystander video showing Pretti holding a mobile phone and court records indicating he had no criminal history.
Legal representatives claim the Department of Justice’s refusal to share information violates the federal Crime Victims’ Rights Act. Additionally, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is leading a lawsuit against the DOJ to secure investigative files after prosecutors reportedly stopped sharing evidence with Minnesota authorities investigating the deaths of Pretti and Renee Good.
