Investigation into Szijjártó Péter and BYD

Overview

Former Hungarian foreign affairs and trade minister Szijjártó Péter is under investigation following allegations of bribery. The probe was initiated after MP Tényi István filed a complaint alleging that Szijjártó accepted illicit benefits in connection with his appointment to a global leadership role at the Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturer BYD.

The Budapest Chief Prosecutor's Office transferred the case to the Budapest Police Headquarters to investigate potential violations of the Penal Code. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán remarked that the appointment was “too public” and suggested it might serve as a reward for the former minister’s role in attracting investment. As Szijjártó is no longer a member of parliament, he does not possess parliamentary immunity. The investigation is ongoing, and no indictment has been issued.
