Investigation into the death of Maria Ionescu

Authorities in Abruzzo are investigating the death of 66-year-old Maria Ionescu, who was found dead in the countryside near Francavilla al Mare. Her body was discovered by a passerby walking a dog near an olive tree in a rugged area approximately 1.5 kilometers from the A14 motorway.

Ionescu had previously disappeared from the Alento Ovest service area while traveling from Rimini to Taranto with her partner of over 20 years. Her partner stated she had returned to the service area to retrieve a forgotten scarf before they lost contact. Investigators are examining the circumstances of her disappearance, noting reports of a possible argument between the couple prior to the event.

As Ionescu was found hanged with a wire around her neck, officials initially considered suicide as a hypothesis. The partner was questioned for five hours by the Chieti prosecutor’s office as a person informed of the facts. Forensic examinations and an autopsy are expected to determine the exact cause of death.
