Investigations into deaths of young women in Honduras

Overview

Authorities in Honduras are investigating the deaths of two young women under suspicious circumstances.

In late August, an investigation was launched in Yusguare, Choluteca, following the discovery of 18-year-old Ana Jackeline Flores Alvarado’s body hanging from a tree. While family accounts suggested suicide due to depression, police noted potential defensive wounds on her wrists, leading investigators to not rule out criminal activity. A medico-legal autopsy was ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

In September, a separate investigation began in the Santa Rosa de Aguán region after the burned body of 21-year-old Sindy Loany Matute Morales was found on a beach. Morales had previously reported fears of being followed by suspicious individuals. Police are working to determine if the burn marks occurred before or after death, though no arrests have been made and the motive remains unknown.
