Authorities in Brazil, Colombia, and the United States are investigating several incidents of suspected femicide and gender-based violence. In Brazil, investigations continue into the deaths of 19-year-old Joviana Evelyn Iankovski in Santa Catarina and 18-year-old Raiana Silva dos Santos in Bahia. In the Santa Catarina case, 21-year-old José Gustavo Rabelo, the victim’s partner, has confessed to the murder. Iankovski, a biology student at the University of the Extreme South of Santa Catarina, was found dead in a locked room in Sangão, wrapped in blankets with facial injuries. In São Paulo, 23-year-old law student Lívia Berthoud was shot in Pindamonhangaba; her ex-boyfriend, Carlos Eduardo Barbosa Vieira Leite, was arrested after being found with injuries suggesting a suicide attempt. A .38 caliber revolver was seized, and the victim had an active protective order against him. Other recent Brazilian reports include the shooting of a 23-year-old woman in Pindamonhangaba, the killing of a 43-year-old woman in Osasco, and the discovery of a 33-year-old woman dead in an abandoned house in São Paulo. Additionally, an 18-year-old woman in Palmas was rescued from unlawful confinement after sending hidden messages to her family. New reports from Brazil also include two men arrested in Ouriçangas for attacking women with a scythe, and an arrest in Duque de Caxias involving a man who threatened his ex-partner and offered money for others to assault her. In response to these trends, regional initiatives such as the ‘Todos Por Elas’ program in Mato Grosso do Sul and the ‘Agosto Lilás’ campaign are underway to combat gender violence.
