Authorities in Brazil, Colombia, and the United States are investigating several incidents of suspected femicide and gender-based violence. In Brazil, investigations continue into the deaths of 19-year-old Joviana Evelyn Iankovski in Santa Catarina and 18-year-old Raiana Silva dos Santos in Bahia. In the Santa Catarina case, 21-year-old José Gustavo Rabelo, the victim’s partner, has confessed to the murder. Iankovski, a biology student at the University of the Extreme South of Santa Catarina, was found dead in a locked room in Sangão, wrapped in blankets with facial injuries. The investigation began after her mother noticed inconsistent text messages from the victim’s phone. The Judiciary of Santa Catarina has decreed Rabelo’s preventive detention. In São Paulo, 23-year-old law student Lívia Berthoud was shot in Pindamonhangaba; her ex-boyfriend, Carlos Eduardo Barbosa Vieira Leite, was arrested after being found with injuries suggesting a suicide attempt. A .38 caliber revolver was seized, and the victim had an active protective order against him.
