iPS cell heart muscle sheet clinical surgery in Japan
Overview
In September 2026, surgeons at Osaka Keisatsu Hospital in Japan performed the world’s first clinical surgery using commercially available heart muscle stem cell sheets to treat severe heart failure. The procedure involved transplanting three sheets of cardiomyocytes derived from induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells into a woman in her 50s.
The therapy, known commercially as ‘RiHeart’ or ‘Reheart,’ was developed by the startup Cuorips Inc. (also referred to as QualiCEPT) based on technology from Professor Yoshiki Sawa and Nobel laureate Shinya Yamanaka. The treatment received conditional government approval in March.
The patient reported significant improvement in her ability to breathe and is preparing for discharge. To secure full authorization, the developer must use the treatment on 75 patients within seven years. The medical team and developer aim to expand the procedure to additional patients and facilities to further evaluate efficacy and safety.
