IPU conference discussions on human rights
Overview
During the 12th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) World Conference of Young Parliamentarians in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, delegations from Iran and Algeria addressed the application of international human rights and humanitarian law.
Zahra Khodadadi, representing the Iranian Parliament, advocated for the non-selective application of human rights and highlighted the need to combat digital violence to ensure political engagement for women and youth. She also criticized the international community for the ‘normalization of war’ and the perceived silence regarding civilian rights in conflict zones.
Similarly, the Algerian delegation called for universal human rights and justice. Issam Nechma emphasized that human dignity cannot be addressed without considering the suffering of Palestinian youth in Gaza, describing the targeting of young people in conflicts as a ‘studied criminal tendency’. The Algerian representatives also called for security solutions in the Sahel region that address underlying conflicts alongside military cooperation.
