Iquique official flag creation process

Overview

The Municipality of Iquique has launched the ‘Una Bandera Para Iquique’ initiative to establish the city’s first official municipal flag, addressing the current lack of a single, institutionally recognized symbol. While various versions are used in parades and sporting events, none hold official status.

Mayor Mauricio Soria Macchiavello previously met with the National Vexillology Corporation (CONAVEX Chile) to establish technical foundations. To advance the project, a commission of experts—including historians, academics, and specialists in anthropology, design, and vexillology—has been formed to set the technical criteria for a public contest. The commission will not design the emblem directly but will develop the guidelines for the competition. The commission is expected to include Lautaro Núñez Atencio, the 2002 National History Prize winner.

The final design is intended to reflect the maritime, pampino, and historical components of Iquique and the Tarapacá Region. Following a technical evaluation of submissions, the final emblem will be selected through a citizen vote.
