Iquitos school structure collapse investigation

Overview

An 18-year-old student died following the collapse of a concrete structure, described as an old water tank or wall, at the Petronila Perea de Ferrando educational institution in Iquitos, Loreto. The incident occurred during demolition work that students were allegedly performing under teacher direction as part of a graded activity. A second student was injured in the collapse.

Following the accident, the school’s director and a teacher were detained by the National Police and Public Ministry. The educators face charges including involuntary manslaughter, negligent injury, endangering a dependent person, and abuse of authority.

A court in Maynas later ordered the release of director Elías Grandez Zegarra and teacher Alfred Chilcho Saavedra, though both remain under restricted appearance. While the victim’s father maintains that students were forced to participate in the demolition, prosecutors are continuing their investigation by gathering testimonies from approximately 40 students and conducting technical inspections.
