Overview
The Iranian banking sector has faced significant backlogs in providing mandatory marriage and childbirth loans. Data from the General Inspection Organization indicated that over 1.1 million people were in queues, with approximately 614,000 applicants waiting for marriage loans and 515,000 awaiting childbirth loans. Officials attributed these delays to insufficient liquidity, high levels of non-performing loans, and bank resources being tied up in non-productive assets.
In response, the Ministry of Sport and Youth, following discussions with the Central Bank and the Budget Commission, announced measures to clear outstanding claims from the previous year. While the loan amounts will remain unchanged due to banking capacity and high demand, 270 trillion tomans have been allocated to banks to fund these loans. Officials have committed to a processing time for new marriage loans of no more than three months in the coming year, with local governors working to eliminate provincial backlogs by autumn.
