Iran expands missile range and faces nuclear scrutiny

Overview

Iran has announced a strategic shift in its missile program, moving to increase the range of its ballistic missiles beyond the previous 2,000-kilometer limit. This decision marks a departure from a long-standing policy of maintaining a technical and political cap on range to avoid targeting European nations. The expansion is driven by recent combat experiences and the presence of U.S. forces within 1,000 kilometers of the Iranian coast.

Brigadier General Mohammad Akrami-nia stated that the military is upgrading its entire arsenal to improve the speed and precision of future missile generations. These upgrades follow the use of ground-to-ground missiles against U.S. bases in Kuwait and naval cruise missiles against enemy vessels.

Parallel tensions have emerged regarding Iran’s nuclear program. While President Masoud Pezeshkian has denied intentions to develop nuclear weapons, citing an Islamic fatwa and a willingness to accept international inspections, other officials have offered conflicting signals. Mohsen Rezai, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, suggested that attacks from the U.S. and Israel may grant Iran the right to withdraw from the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Satellite imagery reportedly shows the construction of new facilities, some built deep underground to protect against potential strikes. Diplomatically, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi continues to advocate for negotiations, stating ‘there is no military solution to the conflict with the United States,’ while Speaker of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf maintains that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed unless Washington meets seven conditions established in a June provisional agreement.
