In early August 2026 Iran’s foreign minister warned the United Kingdom against cooperating with the United States or Israel in any military action toward Iran, objecting to the UK’s labeling of Iran’s armed forces as aggressors and announcing plans with Oman for a Strait of Hormuz traffic‑management mechanism. The minister reiterated the warning later that day, citing the February US‑Israel strikes that killed senior Iranian officials and Iran’s subsequent missile and drone attacks, and referenced a June U.S. memorandum that Tehran said had not been honoured. On 1 August, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expanded the warning, stating that any hostile action by the United States or Israel would be met with a decisive and proportional response, including possible strikes on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. He also cautioned the United Kingdom, Bulgaria and Cyprus that allowing their territory or facilities to be used for attacks would render them aggressors and could justify legal self‑defence against them. The British foreign secretary reiterated that the UK is not a party to any war with Iran and stressed continued diplomatic engagement. Later on 1 August, Araghchi told regional counterparts, including Britain’s foreign minister Ed Miliband, that Tehran would respond forcefully to any further U.S. or Israeli aggression, describing the policy as an “eye‑for‑an‑eye” defence of its infrastructure. He warned that participation in strikes against Iran would bring legal and security consequences. U.S. officials signaled plans for new strikes within the week, and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced that the Strait of Hormuz was effectively closed to navigation except for vessels coordinated with Iranian forces. Shipping data showed a sharp reduction in traffic through Hormuz, while U.S. bases in the United Kingdom were reported to be supporting the planned operations.
