Iranian healthcare and social stability challenges

Iranian officials and lawmakers are addressing significant pressures on the nation’s healthcare system and social stability. The Minister of Health, Mohammad Reza Zafarkandi, reported that the ministry is managing extraordinary challenges stemming from regional conflicts, including the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh and incidents in Lebanon. These crises have contributed to the displacement of an estimated 8 to 10 million people from Tehran to other cities, requiring medical universities to increase readiness and supplies such as serum and blood.

Concurrently, the Iranian Parliament’s Health and Treatment Commission is intensifying oversight of the sector. Lawmakers are reviewing 157 questions for the Minister of Health regarding rising treatment costs, high drug prices, and a critical shortage of approximately 800 types of medication. Additionally, discussions with the Social Security Organization have focused on financial strategies to settle outstanding debts to medical universities, pharmacies, and dialysis centers, while addressing the impact of inflation on medical resources.
